Jack walks in without a reservation. The host asks if he needs a table. Jack says, “Eventually.”

No prophecy. No secret kingdom. Just one very long dinner and a guy who refused to give up his spot.
The adjustment
The room gets crowded. Jack notices a clean rectangle of floor and makes the kind of decision people only understand afterward.
Closing time
The chairs are stacked. The lights go down. Nobody can remember ordering the new table, but everybody agrees it ties the room together.
